The way to success in distant education

For the learning process to be effective, it is very important for the learners to pay attention and engage in the learning of the presented information. Therefore, especially in distant education, presence of the learners is very important. In order to make sure that everyone is present, teachers can benefit from certain variables such as social presence, teaching presence, transactional presence and cognitive presence.

First of all, Teaching Presence is the presence of the teacher. This can be observed in every lesson. The teacher has to be present to transfer the information to his/her students. Second, Social Presence is the sence of togetherness of the learners. Students should not just be attending to a lesson but they should be participating in it. Social Presence can be integrated into the classroom through small activities that engage the students with the lesson. Thirdly, Transactional Presence is feeling connected to others. Students can share their opinion, some information to their classmates, this way, they will be in connection to them. Finally, Cognitive Presence is constructing knowledge through sustained reflection. Cognitive Presence involves critical thinking, sharing and creating new ideas. This can be integrated into the classroom through activities that require the learners to work together with their classmates.

All of these can be integrated into the classroom through eight steps.
The Pre-Work stage is where the Teaching Presence can be observed. In the second, sign-in activity step, is where the Social Presence is integrated. With an activity at the beginning, the students can be percieved as individuals, rather than just being a name in the online class. In the third and fourth steps, cognitive presence is integrated. Together as groups in breakouts, the students can create knowledge and get involved in critical thinking. In the Share-Out stage students share their ideas, opinions with each other. This is where Transactional Presence can be observed. A lesson formed according to these steps will be very effective for the learners when compared to a lesson where the teacher is active.
